I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I messaged Krystle Bannister a little over 8 months ago to find out more about this running thing I kept seeing her post about. I was skeptical. I had never run a race nor thought of myself as the running type. However, eight months and countless new friends later, I count myself thoroughly fortunate for the opportunity to discover in myself a passion for running – and racing – I never knew existed. What began as a goal to finish that first race has quickly transformed into an earnest desire to continually challenge myself to greater distances and faster times. At each turn I have been embraced by friends, new and old, who with each word and every group run push me to be the best version of myself. In the time since I have completed 3 5Ks, a 5K trail run, and 3 10Ks.
As I am now set to prepare for not merely completing but competing in my first half marathon, I am confident that I am up to the challenge. First Flight gave me the gift of running, but more importantly the greater reward of a confidence in myself. I now know what I did not before: that when I lace up my shoes and head out for a run, I can and will achieve my goals. I am thankful to have had the opportunity just as I am grateful for the continuing rewards that come from knowing I can achieve anything if only I accept the challenge and work to get it done. I am grateful to First Flight for the support, to my friends for their encouragement and company along the way, and for the next adventure. I was not a runner before. I’m a passionate participant now and do not plan to look back. Thanks again First Flight Alliance!
